Preparing For The MRI Exam
A MRI exam is safe, simple, and painless. If your exam involves contrast, a small needle may be used for the dye. There is no special preparation needed. You can eat normally and take medication as usual unless your doctor has given you other instructions.

Wear comfortable clothing without metal snaps or zippers. Gowns are available if needed. Hairpins, jewelry or watches should not be worn into the scan room by either patients or parents of a child having an exam. It is best to leave all jewelry at home.

All patients will be asked to remove eye glasses, credit cards, dentures, hearing aids and any other metallic objects you are wearing or carrying. Because metal often interferes with the MRI machine, patients cannot be examined if they have:

•    Brain aneurysm clips (some clips are compatible, additional information required)
•    A pacemaker or pacing wires
•    Metal fragments in one or both eyes
•    Inner ear implants
•    An implanted spinal cord stimulator or brain stimulator
During The Exam
A technologist will help position you on the cushioned scanning table, where you will lie on your back during the MRI procedure. A surface coil may be attached to the part of the body to be scanned.

The exam takes approximately 30 minutes. The MRI has no side effects and you can leave immediately following the exam.
